Design & planting

Tilth studio

A roof terrace with steel planters, grasses and a small table above the rooftops.

The brief

A roof terrace that could survive wind and full sun, with a sheltered corner to sit in after work.

What we did

Weight limits shaped everything. Lightweight substrate, steel planters along the parapet and grasses that move with the wind instead of fighting it.

A low hedge of planting breaks the gusts around the seat. In September the whole roof turns gold against the chimneys.

A gravel path edged with soft grasses and pale flower heads.

After the rain

Dark burnet heads, fine grasses and pale asters in a late summer border.

Late flowers

Burnet flowers and fine grass seedheads against a sunlit stone wall.
