Design & planting

Tilth studio

Raised timber beds with vegetables and flowers on gravel inside a walled kitchen garden.

The brief

Raised beds for vegetables and cut flowers, close to the house and pleasant to walk through every day.

What we did

Oak beds on a simple grid, wide gravel paths for a barrow and a long border of flowers for the kitchen table.

Perennials hold the edges through winter, so the garden still looks cared for when the beds are empty.

A tipped terracotta pot and a trowel with dark soil on a stone ledge.

Soil first

A muted green timber gate in an old stone wall, with grasses either side.

Through the gate

Dark burnet heads, fine grasses and pale asters in a late summer border.

Flowers for cutting
